Newark Comes Alive - on the 10th July 2009
Well ain't it about time?
We at Forefront have been on the go as a business for over three years now and in that time very little in the area has really been done to promote Newark's considerable wealth of musical talent. But don't blame us - we're not in business as event organisers or promoters, we simply hire out kit and expertise to those who are.
Having taken up the recording/rehearsal studio, which we imaginatively named "FP Studio", at the beginning of 2008, we have developed relationships with many bands in the area and recognise the difficulties they have in staging gigs which will be attended enthusiastically by their friends, families and fans. So we've finally taken matters into our own hands.
So what's different about Newark Comes Alive? Well, for one thing - the ticket fee...
Now, let's not be misunderstood here. Much respect to those who have made efforts to put on showcase events before: band nights, gig nights, jam nights, open mic nights - and with mostly free entry to the public. Alas we at Forefront don't have the resources to stage events at premises owned by ourselves: be it open air parkland or a town centre theatre; so we've looked at what commercial premises - themselves in need of support of the paying public - are available to stage a similarly commercial event. As such, we have to charge a ticket price to cover our costs; but on the upside, it means the bands themselves get rewarded financially for their performances, which must be a good thing!
In our first foray into such teritory, we decided that Newark Working Mens Club has the perfect combination of facilties to host such an event.
Accommodating up to 200 revellers, the venue has a decent stage, licensed bar served in the main concert room and best of all from our perspective: ground level access!
Appearing on this first occasion we have (in no particular order): Jacket • Machine God • Cellar Records • The Would Be Assassins • Monnika.
Tickets are available from band members priced at £6 - that's a mere £1.20 per band! Entry for non ticket holders will be £7 on the door subject to there being spare capacity. Under 18s must have adult supervision. Doors open 6pm, last band finishes 11pm and curfew at 11:30pm.
So let's have some enthusiastic support from all you music lovers and help make Newark Comes Alive a success for all concerned.

Americana International 2008
Once again we shall be providing sound and lighting at the Americana International Festival, Newark Showground, 11-13 July.
The rockabilly stage, housed in the Joe Hallam pavilion, proved a rip-roaring success last year, with the room full to bursting each night.
Come along this year and get them feet a tappin'.A summer music festival is to be held at Newark’s Riverside Park.
The organisers say it will replace the live music that was a central part of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Newark On Water Festival.
That festival was last held in 2004 when 16,000 people watched the headline act, The Human League.
Admission was free but the cost of running it, and health and safety concerns caused by the high attendance, led to it being scrapped.
Now, the couple who ran the children’s fairground that was part of the event are bringing music back.
Mr and Mrs Gordon Pearson have booked a Robbie Williams tribute band, Robbie Williams Millennium, to perform on Saturday, June 14, and the Motown group, JD And The Impressions, for the following day.
Local bands will make up the rest of the line-up over the two days. The event will open at 10am and close at 10pm each day.
Tickets will cost £3 and under-tens will be admitted free.
The Pearsons, who are investing £5,000-£6,000 in the event, have the support of the district council.
Mr Pearson, the owner of Pearson’s Amusements of Ibstock, Leicestershire, said Newark had missed the music that came with the Newark On Water Festival.
He said he wanted his Newark Music Festival to be a local attraction, although there was no way of halting wider appeal.
Mr Pearson said it was the first time they had organised a music festival.
He said the site would be fenced and there would be stewards from a reputable security firm. The stage and music system have already been booked.
Mr Pearson, who has been in the fairground business for 50 years and travels all over the UK, said: “We believe it will be successful enough for us to hold it every year.
“It won’t be as big as before, but there were a lot of disappointed people, including us, when it finished so we hope by bringing it back we can make those people happy again.” - The Newark Advertiser
